Super Hero Nights
Every child is unique. Each grows and learns in his or her own special way. And without exception, all children love to play. Kids with disabilities are no different. Whether a child’s disability is mild or severe, obvious or not, that child is first and foremost a kid – which means he or she will have the natural instinct to explore the world through play, just like any other child.
During Super Hero Nights, admission is free for families with children who have special needs. Enjoy a quieter and welcoming environment throughout our exhibits.
Cost: Free
When: Last Sunday of every month from 6-7:30pm
Who: Families with children who have special needs

This is an ALL AGES event and participants are welcome and encouraged to enjoy all offered activities.
For more information, please visit the facebook event here. For questions or additional accommodations, please contact Jessie Witherell at jessiewitherell@hotmail.com.

Come join us for a special access browsing hour for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families on February 1st from 5:30pm-6:30pm at the North Liberty Community Library! The library will be closed to the general public so that patrons can have a quieter library experience and so families can meet and connect with one another. There will be a craft activity, toy trains, Wii games in the teen room as well as a special glow stick dance party. This is a great opportunity to get out of the house and burn off some energy! The dance party will be away from other library activities for the comfort of those who may find it overstimulating. Glow sticks and balloons will be provided by The Iowa City Autism Community.
This event is ALL AGES and is open to individuals on the autism spectrum or others who have sensory processing disorders such as PDD-NOS or ADHD. Siblings are always welcome! No sign up is necessary. Come on out!

Your child can have a chance to be a super hero at the Iowa Children’s Museum! The Iowa Children’s Museum (ICM) is an amazing play space where children can use their minds, bodies, and senses to explore art, music, theories of how things go, and the world around them.
But many children can also feel overwhelmed or stressed with the daily excitement and activity in a museum. For families with children with autism and other disabilities, the bright lights and noise of children exploring the museum can also be over-stimulating. Parents may be worried that their child might have a meltdown, or they may worry that the ICM wouldn’t be fun for their child. To make this amazing learning experience accessible to all children and families, the ICM offers Super Hero Nights.
Super Hero Nights are offered for families of children with special needs
Super Hero Nights occur after regular museum hours on the last Sunday of the month from 6-7:30PM. This is a quieter time for families to explore the ICM. Admission is free for families of children with special needs on Super Hero Nights.
You can find more information about Super Hero Nights by clicking HERE. Also, the ICM has written an amazing social story with pictures that you can show to your child to explain the ICM, the rules, and what to expect when visiting. You can access that social story by clicking HERE.
If you have any questions, please contact Amber Morris at amorris@theicm.org.

Chinese dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology and Chinese folklore. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize strong and lucky powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. Today we will learn more about dragons in the Chinese culture and use watercolors to entail the watery elements of dragons and create custom art!

One of the lasting artistic legacies from the ancient Greeks is the art of the mosaic. A mosaic is a picture made up of small pieces of glass, pottery, or small tiles. Thousands of small pieces of colored tiles are placed together so that all together they make up a picture. Often depicting pagan gods, people and animals, the Ancient Greeks were the first to use what is known today as tesserae or the many small pieces of marble, glass, or tile that comprise a mosaic artwork. This Wednesday everyone will have the chance to create their own mosaics in the style of Greek mosaic tradition!

The University Lecture Committee has teamed up with UI Students for Disability Advocacy & Awareness to bring How to ADHD YouTuber Jessica McCabe to The Englert Theatre on October 8th!
Jessica’s ADHD-focused YouTube channel has taken off in recent years, with over 300,000 subscribers and hundreds of videos discussing the ADHD experience. Her 2017 TED Talk “Failing at Normal: An ADHD Success Story” has nearly 1.2 million views, and she has given talks about ADHD across the world — including as the keynote speaker for the 2018 International Conference on ADHD.
The CDC estimates that approximately 11% of Americans, both adults and children, will receive a diagnosis of ADHD in their lifetime. These 1 out of 10 are our friends, our neighbors, our co-workers, our children, our spouses, our clients, our patients, our students — and yet few people truly know what it means to experience life as an ADHDer. Jessica’s talk will clue audience members into the real realities of a life lived with a neurodiverse brain — the struggles, the triumphs, the tears, and the laughs!
All ULC events are free and open to the public, first come, first seated. This event is not ticketed. For more event information, visit https://lectures.uiowa.edu.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who will need an accommodation in order to participate in this event, please contact UISDAA at (319) 621-8973 or at studorg-uisdaa@uiowa.edu. You can also contact the Englert Theatre directly at (319) 688-2653 or via their online contact form at https://englert.org/contact-form/. ASL interpreters will be provided for this event

Starting Jan 4 through Feb 29, 3:00-4:00pm, we will have the north basketball court reserved for ICAC! We are very grateful to the IC Recreation Superintendent, Brad Barker, for giving us use of this court for FREE- at least $400 in-kind donation. Please see flier for details. HERE IS A GOOGLE FORM – this will just help me know what to expect as far as turn out. You don’t *have* to come every time (I won’t be able to attend on 2/29), but it would be fun to have a consistent group 🙂.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, from places you least expect and those that are right in front of you.
This festival is full of fun! Collaborative artwork and individual submissions will be on display. Local agencies will have art and sensory booths that can be enjoyed at any age. Therapy animals, and so much more…
Partnered with The Arc of Southeast Iowa, all art submissions can be sent to or dropped off at The Arc of Southeast Iowa office.

Hubert’s Night Owls at The Museum!
This program, called Hubert’s Night Owls, is the Museum’s latest addition to access-friendly programming.
The Museum will close at 4 p.m. to the public, but remain open for people with disabilities, as well as their friends and families, from 4 to 5 p.m. During this time, exhibits will be modified, reducing stimuli in order to provide a sensory-friendly experience. This includes turning off displays that make noise and dimmer lighting. We will provide multi-sensory opportunities for learners who benefit from tactile experiences.
Museum staff will also offer crafts and activities for young visitors.
“We believe that our museum belongs to everyone and it is our job to make sure that people feel welcome and included in this space,” NCSML’s K-12 Learning Specialist Sarah Henderson says. “Hubert’s Night Owls is one small step toward making the NCSML a place that everyone will think of as ‘their museum’”
Hubert’s Night Owls will be offered on four Sundays in 2020:
Feb. 23, 4 to 5 p.m.
July 19, 4 to 5 p.m.
October 18, 4 to 5 p.m.
December 13, 4 to 5 p.m.
Attendees will need to pay the admission fee for Hubert’s Night Owls. Admission is free for NCSML members.
For more information, contact the Museum at 319-362-8500.

You are invited to attend a virtual workshop with Dr. Mona Delahooke on Saturday, September 18, 1:00pm-2:30pm. Mona’s book, Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children’s Behavioral Challenges, is now #1 in Clinical Psychology on Amazon.
Registration is through Tanager Place’s Meraki Institute’s page and is $10- https://merakiinstitute.org/…/autism-workshop-series…/
Dr. Delahooke presents an approach to challenging behavior that is based on relationship building, empathy, and an understanding of the neuroscientific underpinnings of maladaptive behavior.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
This training will introduce a new approach to solving children’s behavioral challenges, focusing on building a child’s foundation for emotional and behavioral control and moving beyond paradigms that focus on compliance and surface behaviors.
Dr. Delahooke will describe behaviors as the tip of the iceberg, important signals that we should address by seeking to understand a child’s individual differences in the overarching context of relational safety.
Featuring helpful worksheets and charts, this training will provide educators, parents, early childhood interventionists, and providers across disciplines tools and techniques to reduce behavioral challenges and promote psychological resilience and satisfying, secure relationships.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Understand the “Developmental Iceberg” and how it helps us discover how to support each child and family’s individual needs.
Understand the 4 states of the nervous system that inform us what to do in real time when managing children’s behavioral challenges.
Describe how caregivers, providers and teachers can use the “therapeutic use of self” when working with vulnerable children, regardless of their diagnosis.
Describe the paradigm shift that is beginning across the country based on neuroscience research..
